Although this newer home in Inman Park was designed with an option to finish the basement, when the house was built, the space was left unfinished. The homeowners asked us to refine the layout of the rooms and finish the space to match the details and quality in the rest of the house. They wanted a den/ family space to gather, a guest bedroom, an office/ exercise room, a bathroom accessible to all of the basement areas, and adequate space for storage and mechanicals. We designed a comfortable family room/ den area at the base of the stairs, which serves as an interesting focal point as you enter the finished basement space. The front two rooms are designed with the ability to serve the necessary functions of guest bedroom, exercise room and office. They each required egress windows, which we installed to replace the existing smaller windows. This change allowed for more natural light into the basement area. The remaining basement space was dedicated to useful storage and mechanical areas. The bathroom design reflects details used in the rest of the house, such as the pedestal sink, subway and hexagonal tile, and an open shower. The recessed medicine cabinet and light fixtures also are compatible with the style used in the rest of the home. Wood floors, crown molding, window and door casing, and a 2-panel door style are all details carefully chosen to match the style and quality reflected in the rest of the home. The new finished basement area provides the homeowners with the necessary overflow space they desired while making their home feel larger and more comfortable.
