The priorities for the renovation of this 1950’s ranch were to enlarge and update the kitchen, add a second story including more bedroom and bath space, design a more comfortable living space on the first floor, and change the character of the home both inside and out, while increasing the overall efficiency of the home. By designing second story, covered front porch and screened back porch additions, the roofline of the home changed drastically, and the horizontal character of the 1950’s ranch was quickly lost. By breaking up the mass of the home with lower roofs and different siding materials, the overall scale was kept in proportion and was appropriate for the neighborhood. A new partially open staircase leads up to a sitting area in the second floor addition. Two comfortable bedrooms share a Jack-and-Jill bath on one side of the addition, and the master suite is on the other. The shared bath features decorative glass tile accents inserted into the floor and walls of the tub/ shower. The vanity countertop is made of concrete and recycled glass and adds a unique touch to the space. The master bedroom has large windows that provide a lot of light and views of the expansive front yard. We designed his and her walk-in closets with wonderfully efficient storage space and a dressing area that connects the closets to the master bathroom. The bathroom features a custom built cherry wood vanity with two sinks, ample base cabinet storage and plenty of valuable counter space. A frameless glass enclosure surrounds the large shower that includes an additional rain head as well as a comfortable bench area. The overall result of this renovation is an extraordinary transformation from an outdated 1950’s ranch with very little character to a beautiful Craftsman styled two-story home that appears to have been designed specifically for this particular site. The addition and changes to the home look as if they have always been there, reflecting a successful and environmentally friendly renovation - green products and practices were incorporated into every room of this award-winning, EarthCraft certified home. The homeowners gained the space their family needed while adding the quality, details and character their home had been lacking.
