The front entry of this home was rarely used because of the poor layout. On one side was an awkwardly long dining room that the homeowners never used, and on the other side was a small office that lacked privacy and storage. The layout forced traffic to wind through the office and kitchen in order to get to the living area at the back of the house. We improved the entrance by opening up the long wall of the dining room and installing two large pocket doors. A majority of the time, the doors remain open allowing you to see through to the back of the house and giving the entire area a more spacious feel, maintaining the option of closing them for privacy. We closed off the office, so it has its own private entrance from the hallway as well as its own closet. Built-in cabinetry was moved from the middle room that was used to house the piano. The cabinetry now is a beautiful feature at the entry, and the piano sits in the front room along with a couple of chairs, creating a comfortable sitting area. The middle room now offers the flexibility to be a dining room when the homeowners need one, but can also easily open up to be a comfortable transition space that connects all areas of the house. Inefficient windows were replaced with more proportional windows that allow for a more functional furniture layout. The refinished hardwood floors and fresh paint were the final touches on a beautiful transformation that made the once avoided front entry one of the highlights of the home.
