This wonderful 1908 home needed some sprucing up before its 100th birthday, and the homeowners called us to help. They had done little to update the finishes in the home since the 1970’s, and the area where they spent the most time (kitchen & family room) really needed some improvements to the layout. We opened up the kitchen to the family room, incorporating space from an existing mudroom. We raised the ceiling in the kitchen back to its original height and extended new cabinets to the ceiling. The new kitchen layout was much more efficient, allowing for valuable cabinet storage and counter workspace. Along with the open floor plan, the white cabinetry and additional lighting brightened up the once dark and confined space tremendously. Although the size of the mudroom was decreased, the new layout was much more efficient and allowed for convenient laundry and storage areas. By designing entertainment cabinetry in the family room, the furniture layout and traffic pattern became much more comfortable. The original library space was huge and had become a “catch all” for the entire home. By using a portion of the room as a vestibule with two spacious storage closets, the library became more private and the furniture layout more efficient. Upstairs we reconfigured the space to allow for more closet storage, and we renovated the outdated master bath reusing an existing claw foot tub and maintaining the character of the home. Hardwood floors were refinished throughout the entire house, and a fresh coat of paint was applied to all areas as the finishing touch to a wonderful makeover. The 100-year-old home felt like new just in time for the celebration!
