These homeowners needed more space and had already completed an attic addition to their home. They loved the neighborhood and wanted to make this house work for their family’s growing needs. Despite the fact that the existing area under the house consisted of only a small dug out area for mechanicals surrounded by an 18-inch crawl space, we decided creating a finished basement was the best option to give the homeowners the space they needed. They wanted an area for watching movies, working on the computer, exercising, playing games, an office area, a full bath, and a guest bedroom. The first huge step of this process was to dig out a tremendous amount of dirt! We did this while carefully supporting the structure and not disturbing the lives of the homeowners on the floors above. A large window well replaced the existing exterior stairs into the basement and provided plenty of natural light in the game room area. A new interior stair replaced the old one, and a custom railing detail was added to match the existing on the first floor. Custom cabinetry was placed at the base of the stairs, providing a beautiful visual focus upon entering the basement. The media room was placed in an area without any windows, providing the necessary darkness when needed. Custom cabinets were built to house TV/ stereo equipment, computers, and a beverage refrigerator. A recessed ceiling detail centers on the TV cabinetry and provides a creative way to hide some ambient lighting. Greatly needed storage was created in several areas, including below the new stairs. A full bathroom was built off the hallway leading to the office/ guest bedroom. A second window well was installed in the office providing natural light and means of egress. Custom cabinetry was designed to meet the storage demands of the office space and also to house a Murphy bed when a guest bedroom is needed. Features like the pull-out bedside tables and lift-up door to hide unsightly office equipment help to maintain a very clean and contemporary character in the space. The homeowners added their personal touch with light fixtures, art and rugs that reflect the art deco style. The curved lines of the cabinetry also reflect this style, and the stained wood creates a nice warm contrast to the natural concrete floors. What began as a dark and (literally!) dirty crawlspace was transformed into a bright and spacious basement that provides the homeowners with the additional room they needed while reflecting their appreciation for high quality and style.
